SNOMED CT -- the international clinical terminology, and the system this specification reaches for wherever a clinical concept needs a code that means the same thing outside the record it was written in: conditions, procedures, allergen substances, care-team roles, specimen types and the sociodemographic sets.

Published by SNOMED International. Implementers must hold an appropriate SNOMED CT Affiliate licence; content is not distributable without one. For licensing, and to find out whether your jurisdiction holds a national licence that already covers you, see https://www.snomed.org/get-snomed or contact info@snomed.org. Canada has a national release centre, so Canadian implementers should start there rather than assuming an individual affiliate agreement is required.

Codes are obtained from the release your licence entitles you to, or from a terminology server serving that release. The canonical URI is http://snomed.info/sct, which names the terminology without naming an edition or a version; a fully determined reference adds the module and version (http://snomed.info/sct/<module>/version/<yyyymmdd>). This specification pins the unversioned form, so resolve codes against the edition your deployment licenses -- a Canadian edition carries concepts the international release does not.

The set enumerates no codes of its own. It includes the whole system, so it means every code in it, and it exists so the system URI resolves to a definition rather than to nothing. The definition itself stays with the publisher at the canonical above: this specification does not redefine the system and does not restrict it. Where this page shows a list of codes, that list is a SAMPLE reproduced under the publisher's own terms and is not the set's content -- the page says how many of how many it is showing.
